How does sedation dentistry help me get the care I need?

When routine preventive care is missed, painful and scary dental emergencies are more likely. If your only experiences with dental care are occurring when you are in pain and worried, it's no wonder that the fear continues!

We want to put a stop to that cycle and make the care you need accessible and stress-free. Sedation dentistry at our De Pere dental office allows you to receive the care you need and deserve, and our friendly and compassionate dentist, Dr. Chad, is approachable and easy to talk to.

Who can benefit from oral sedation dentistry?

If you get so anxious about visiting the dentist that your oral health suffers, sedation dentistry at our Green Bay may be the solution you need. There are several cases where you should consider oral sedation:

  • You can’t sit still in the dental chair
  • You have a low pain threshold
  • You have a strong gag reflex
  • You have sensitive teeth
  • You need extensive dental work

However, if you are overweight or have sleep apnea, talk to your primary care doctor first. Both conditions can put you at risk for complications from anesthesia. Generally speaking, though, many of our patients can benefit from sedation dentistry.

How does oral sedation dentistry work?

Dr. Chad will prescribe a calming medication in the form of a pill that you will take before your appointment. You'll receive specific instructions regarding the medication from Dr. Chad since there are different options available.

The medication will make you feel somewhat drowsy and groggy, but it won't make you lose consciousness, and you'll still be able to ask questions and respond to our team.

What patients like best about the medication is that it:

  1. Reduces feelings of stress and anxiety
  2. Makes it feel like time is flying by
  3. Makes you less aware of the sounds and other sensory input of the office that people often find stressful
  4. Reduces your memory of the appointment after it is complete

Because the medication makes you drowsy, you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from the appointment. We recommend that you take it easy for the rest of the day so that the medication has time to wear off.

Will oral sedation knock me out?

No, you will remain fully conscious, but you will feel drowsy and very relaxed. Many patients are so comfortable with sedation that they fall asleep during their procedure, but we can wake you easily. Some say they have little to no memory of what happened during the appointment.

Are you so anxious that you would prefer to be unconscious during your procedure? Dr. Chad will be happy to refer you to a dentist who is specially trained to administer IV sedation safely.

Can I drive myself home after having oral sedation?

Patients value oral conscious sedation at our Green Bay dental office because of its stress-reducing effects that allow them to relax comfortably. But the same results mean that it’s not safe for you to drive yourself home from your dental appointment.

The medication and its effects linger for several hours, so have a friend or family member get you safely to and from your appointment. We recommend that you plan to take the rest of the day off and rest comfortably at home. It’s also a good idea to have someone stay with you for an hour or so after you get home just to make sure you’re doing okay.

Will my dental insurance cover the cost of sedation?

It depends on your policy. But even if your insurance doesn’t cover oral sedation, you’ll be happy to know that since we’re just prescribing a pill, the cost is minimal. If you would like more information about the cost of sedation dentistry, please call Fox View Dental, and we’ll be happy to help.

What are other ways you ensure my comfort during my procedure?

At Fox View Dental, we know that it’s the small touches that can help you feel pampered and cared for when you’re feeling stressed. We’ll help you get settled with a pillow and cozy blanket, and TVs in all our treatment rooms mean you can catch up on the latest news or watch your favorite program. If you prefer, we also offer noise canceling headphones to block out the sounds around you and relax.

We’re here to make your visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible. If there’s anything we can do for you to help you relax, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.
