As your leader in De Pere cosmetic dentistry, protecting the health and beauty of your smile is our top concern. Inflammatory gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis are the second most common infectious disease among Americans. If not properly treated, gum disease is known to lead to other health concerns such as heart disease, stroke, certain cancers and tooth loss. However, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of gum disease.

Sure, we all know that diet and exercise are good for keeping the jiggles away. Studies show that both may reduce the risk of gum disease and the more serious periodontal disease as well. One study found that those who exercise regularly from one to three times per week were up to 1/3 less likely to show signs of gum disease. Those who exercise vigorously three times per week or moderately at least five times per week reduced their chances of developing gum disease by half. These findings were based on a comparison to people who participate in no physical activity at all.

If you aren’t choosing to hit the gym for your waistline, do it for your overall health and well-being. This includes the health and well-being of your smile. For more information on the risks and signs of gum disease, speak with a qualified dentist.
