Don't Suffer with Dental Anxiety – We Can Help!

Sedation Dentistry in De Pere, WI

Dental fear and anxiety, or feelings of fear and anxiety about going to the dentist, are very common, affecting millions of Americans. It can also have serious repercussions because when you’re scared to see your dentist for necessary dental care, it often prompts you to skip the dentist altogether. This can lead to complications, including the development and exacerbation of oral health issues. If your dental fear is keeping you from getting the care you need, then you can trust Dr. Yenchesky of Fox View Dental to help you by offering sedation dentistry.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of safely using substances to keep patients calm and relaxed. Once you’re calm, the process goes by more quickly and comfortably, and you’re likely to feel less afraid for your next dental appointment. De Pere sleep dentist, Dr. Yenchesky proudly offers oral conscious sedation to stop dental fear and help ensure you’re comfortable enough to visit us for future appointments.

What Is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation involves simply taking a pill at a prescribed time before your appointment. Some of the many benefits of oral conscious sedation include the following:

Simple and Painless – Oral conscious sedation is easy –simply swallow your sedative at the prescribed amount of time before your appointment. It’s also a painless alternative to IV sedation.

Allows You To Stay Conscious – As a form of conscious sedation, oral conscious sedation allows you to stay awake and responsive. This helps Dr. Yenchesky and the staff keep better track of your vitals and allows you to communicate with us if you feel uncomfortable. You may become so drowsy that you fall asleep, but we’ll be able to easily wake you up as necessary.

Forgetfulness – Short-term amnesia is common with oral conscious sedation, so you may not even remember the procedure. This can be a boon to patients with extreme dental anxiety who would rather not remember the process.

Better Pain Management – Substances used in sedation dentistry often have their own pain-relieving properties. This helps make you more resistant to pain and discomfort, which can be especially useful if you’re resistant to anesthetic.

Speeds Up Appointment – Oral conscious sedation makes the time go by faster, increasing your comfort.

Who Can Benefit From Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry?

If you get so anxious about visiting the dentist that your oral health suffers, sedation dentistry at our Green Bay dental office may be the solution you need. Other cases where you should consider oral conscious sedation include:

  • You can’t sit still in the dental chair
  • You have a low pain threshold
  • You have a strong gag reflex
  • You have sensitive teeth
  • You need extensive dental work
  • You have resistance to anesthesia

Is oral conscious sedation safe?

When trained professionals like Dr. Yenchesky and the dental staff at Fox View Dental are involved, oral conscious sedation is both safe and effective. Before approving you for sedation, Dr. Yenchesky will ascertain your health including allergies, medication, medical and family history, as well as other factors that may lead to complications. We’ll also monitor your health and vitals through the entire process and give you advice on what to do to prepare for your visit beforehand.

Who Doesn’t Qualify For Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry?

You may not qualify for oral conscious sedation if:

  • You have sleep apnea
  • You’re overweight
  • You’re using certain medications
  • You have a history or family history of negative reactions to sedation dentistry
  • You can’t secure a ride to and from your appointment

Dr. Yenchesky will work in concert with your primary care physician to ensure sedation dentistry will be both safe and effective for you.

The Oral Conscious Sedation Process

Consultation

Before any procedure takes place with oral conscious sedation, you‘ll undergo an initial consultation with your De Pere sleep dentist, Dr. Yenchesky. He’ll review your medical history, ask you about any medications you‘re taking, and get your consent for sedation. If Dr. Yenchesky approves you for oral conscious sedation, he’ll prescribe your sedative.

Fasting

To avoid complications with sedation such as emesis (vomiting) and asphyxiation (choking), you’ll need to avoid eating and drinking for a certain amount of time before your procedure, usually at least eight to ten hours. Small amounts of clear fluids such as water might be allowed up to four hours before your appointment as these will leave your system the fastest.

Get a Ride

You’ll need to secure transportation to and from your appointment with a reliable, trustworthy driver beforehand. The effects of oral conscious sedation will last at least several hours after you’ve taken your sedative, making it unsafe to drive. Make sure your driver is prepared and able to get you safely to Fox View Dental and back home again.

Wear Comfortable Clothes

You’ll need to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and avoid constricting items that hide your veins, your eyes, and your nail beds such as long sleeves, jewelry, contact lenses, and nail polish. Your sleep dentist and any staff present need to see these parts of your body in order to keep proper track of your vitals.

Taking Your Oral Conscious Sedative

You’ll take your sedative at the time Dr. Yenchesky prescribed you during your consultation. Be sure not to take your sedative too early or too late as this can lead to the effects wearing off during your procedure or not taking place soon enough for your appointment. If you’ve taken your sedative too early or too late, be sure to tell Dr. Yenchesky or the staff at Fox View Dental, as we may need to reschedule your appointment. You can call our De Pere dental office for advice by dialing (920) 336-4201.
